Flat lapping is a controlled abrasive process that produces exceptionally flat, parallel surfaces with superior finishes unattainable through conventional machining methods.

At Prime Surfacing Solutions, we utilise precision lapping techniques to achieve flatness measured in light bands and surface finishes below Ra 0.1 microns. Our expertise spans prototype development through to high-volume production runs.

The Process

What is Flat Lapping?

Flat lapping removes material through the action of loose abrasive particles suspended in a liquid vehicle, applied between the workpiece and a precision lap plate.

Unlike grinding which uses bonded abrasives, lapping's free-cutting action generates minimal heat and stress, preserving component integrity whilst achieving geometric accuracy measured in millionths of an inch.

The result is a surface that is not only dimensionally precise but also free from the subsurface damage associated with more aggressive material removal processes.

Assessment

We evaluate your component geometry, material properties, and required tolerances to determine the optimal lapping strategy.

Preparation

Components are cleaned and inspected. We select appropriate abrasive compounds and plate materials for your specific requirements.

Lapping

Using controlled pressure and precision abrasives, material is removed uniformly until target flatness and finish are achieved.

Verification

Every part undergoes interferometric measurement and detailed inspection before dispatch, with full documentation provided.
